The fourth largest island in the world with 587,041 km2, Madagascar was part of Gondwana and around 180 million years ago began to separate from the current African continent. This change gave way to one of the most extraordinary evolutionary processes on the planet that generated a countless number of species of the animal and plant kingdom which exist exclusively on the island. Among the emblematic species of this evolution and natural selection are the lemurs, orchids, chameleons, and baobabs.

Its geography is very varied, with more than 4,800 km of coastline and dozens of islands. The island has an eastern coastal plain and a large high plateau with a mountain range that runs along its eastern front. The highest point is Mount Maromokotro, 2,876 m above sea level. This prevents the humidity coming from the Indian Ocean from continuing westward, thus generating conditions for the formation of tropical rainforest in the east of the island.

Madagascar’s climates vary by region and are mainly influenced by its geography: Temperate in the interior, tropical in the east, and semi-arid in the south.

Its main natural destinations are Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Masoala National Park, Isalo National Park, Tsingy de Namoroka National Park, Tsingy de Bemaraha Nature Reserve, Ranomafana National Park, Kirindy Mitea National Park, and Ankarana Special Reserve.
